The impacts of the 2018 drought

The year 2018 was the warmest and sunniest year in Germany since weather records started. The extreme drought, which lasted several months, was the main problem for farmers. Also scientists at the four TERENO observatories have observed the course of the drought. Important findings are presented in the newly published TERENO Newsletter.

The 2018 drought was not as severe in the Bavarian pre-Alps as in other parts of Germany. Nevertheless, effects relevant to climate change were also measured in the TERENO pre-Alpin observatory. At the 600 m high Fendt site, which is also a main site in the SUSALPS project, emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O) increased significantly. Further information on this topic can be found on page 6 of the TERENO newsletter.
